Psychologist North Sydney - To Get You Back On Track

Helping adults feel better with personalised therapy by psychologists in North Sydney

We Feel You

Reaching out for help can be a daunting experience. It can be a difficult thing to do. You might be feeling vulnerable. You might feel like nobody will understand your situation or problem. Most of all you might feel like nobody can help you.

Perhaps you can’t describe the feeling but it’s uncomfortable. You’ve felt it for too long and realise it’s time to do something about it.

You might be at a point where not getting help may feel worse than actually doing so.

You're Not Alone

At some point in our lives, we will all go through tough periods where we feel overwhelmed by life’s challenges. In fact, 1 in 10 people will experience depression in their lifetime and 1 in 5 will have anxiety.

All of us will inevitably feel stress at some point, and many will have their own challenges with managing emotions, addictions, trauma, and more.

But life’s too short to have to battle it alone with a one-dimensional approach …

Services: What Do You Need Help With?

Psychologist North Sydney - services we specialise in:

It’s normal to have concerns and worries. But when they begin to take over your life and become a burden intervention is best. Whether it’s:
general anxiety
panic attacks
worry
social anxiety
phobias
We can help you calm those storms.

Everyone will feel levels of depression at some time in their life. But if it lasts for longer than a couple of weeks it’s likely clinical depression which needs to be treated. If you:
– feel long bouts of low mood
lack motivation and self-worth
sleep excessively
– have feelings of hopelessness
Reach out and let us help you out of your rut.

Short-term stress is an inevitable part of life and but long-term or “chronic” stress can have negative effects on your health and evolve into anxiety and depression. Signs:
feel overwhelmed
burnt out
loss of sleep or appetite
self-medicating to cope
Therapy can be a powerful tool to manage the corrosive nature of stress and help you find peace again.

Anger can be a beast which if untamed can run amok and cause a lot of damage to our relationships and other things we value in life. Common signs are:
– rage
– verbal and physical abuse
– yelling
– throwing and breaking things
Fortunately, anger management counselling can help you get a handle on your anger and tame it for good.

We’ve all got our vulnerabilities to vices but what matters most is how we moderate them. If you don’t, addictions can damage your life or worse. If you’re struggling with addictions such as:
– alcohol
– drugs
– gambling
– sex
– internet/video games
– porn
we can give you the tools to help you regain control.

Everyone reacts differently to upsetting and disturbing events in life. Some bounce back quick whereas others can feel the shock waves for a while afterwards. This could include:
– Complex trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from violence, childhood abuse, sexual abuse and troubling events.
Fortunately, we have powerful therapies that can help you manage your trauma and greatly reduce its heavy weight.

Managing expectations around our body and appearance are key to healthy self-esteem. If you struggle with:
– body dysmorphia
– an eating disorder
– binge eating
– anorexia
– bulimia
– negative body image
you don’t have to suffer in silence. We can help you feel better by restoring a more practical and helpful body image standard.

If Obsessive Compulsive Disorder develops it affects our behaviours negatively and can cause difficulties in daily functioning. If you have obsessions and behaviours around things such as:
– cleanliness and hygiene
– safety/checking
– obsessive/obtrusive thoughts around sex, fear or harm
we have tools and skills to help free you from OCD and improve your wellbeing.

Personality disorders like BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) can often be a result of childhood trauma. Certain beliefs and behaviors that come about can be destructive to a person’s health, relationships, and life. The good news is that these can be treated with therapy methods like DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy) which we use in our practice to help you cope with intense emotions and achieve harmony in your life.

Methods - Something For Everyone

Therapy Styles Used By Our Psychologists In North Sydney To Help Treat Your Issues

1. Most Famous Method

The classic and original therapy method for issues like anxiety, depression and stress (and most others) is called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). It basically involves learning to change unhelpful beliefs, thoughts and behaviours that are causing you problems. This method has been scientifically proven to be effective for many people.

2. The More Zen Way

There’s a newer therapy method called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) which is a modern version of CBT that takes principles from Buddhism like “mindfulness”. It’s more about learning to sit with and watch thoughts and feelings arise and not trying to change them or react to them. It’s an effective method that helps you to function better and a lot of evidence has been shown to prove this.

3. Less Talk More Action

If your personality doesn’t vibe with CBT or ACT and you prefer a more to-the-point approach there’s something called Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT). It’s a method that is purely goal-oriented and solution-focused. It’s pretty simple – our psychologists in North Sydney work out exactly what you want and find ways to get you there and solutions to achieve that.

4. Distress-Coping Method

A powerful approach for treating issues such as personality disorders, complex trauma, PTSD, drug and alcohol addictions, eating disorders, mood disorders, depression, self-harm and suicidality is called Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). It involves a range of tools and coping strategies to manage intense negative emotions and distress. Much evidence shows its effectiveness for many people.

Our Approach

My name is Mitchell, Founder and Principal Psychologist of Howarth Psychological Services in North Sydney. For the past eight years, I have been practising as a Clinical Psychologist in North Sydney and surrounds.

I can tell you that there’s not much I haven’t heard before. So you can rest assured. We get where you are right now, we get what it feels like, we get that you probably feel like nobody understands you and that nothing can be done.

But whatever you’re dealing with can be helped and you can make progress. It is possible to feel better.

We’re professionals and we exist for this exact reason – to get you the results that you might have trouble getting by yourself.

Common Questions

How do I get a medicare rebate?

It’s quite simple. If you’re experiencing anxiety, stress, or depression for example, or anything else, contact your GP and say you’d like to arrange a “Mental Health Care Plan” (includes 10 sessions per year) and see a Psychologist. They will sort out the paperwork for you which you then provide to your Psychologist. If the Psychologist does the same as my practice does they can normally process the rebate ($120) and deposit it straight back into your bank account without you having to do that via Centrelink yourself.

Book a consultation of your preference, either in my practice in person or over Zoom. This is your time, so once we’re in session I’m open to speaking about whatever you’d like, and help talk through any challenges you may be facing and formulate ways to overcome them. At the start of every session I’ll give you a questionnaire to see how you’re feeling and coping, and every few sessions we’ll retake the questionnaire and analyse your scores to see how you’re progressing. It’s pretty casual and simple. A lot of what I do is offer a welcoming, empathetic, and completely non-judgemental space to just get things off your chest. Along with that, I’m very you-oriented where I’m committed to listening and understanding you and helping you achieve your goals.

Yes! You can do face to face sessions with our Psychologists in North Sydney where our practice is well located.

Let’s be honest, there’s a bit of a stigma, or at least perceived stigma around therapy and reaching out for help. Many people feel embarrassed, which is something that affects men in particular. And probably for good reason. Our Fathers’ generations were conditioned to not cry, keep a stiff upper lip and “not be weak”. I get it, it’s normal to perhaps feel a bit embarrassed at the thought of speaking to a therapist. But what I can say is that people wildly underestimate the value of just talking to someone and getting something off you’re chest. It sounds trivial but it can help a lot.
Book a free 15-minute chat with me below, or even just feel it out for one session to see what it’s like, with no pressure or obligation to return.

It’s common for people to not be sure if a Psychologist can help them deal with the problem/s they’re dealing with. If you’re thinking the same just know that over 50 years of studies on treatment approaches like CBT have been proven to work for a range of different conditions from anxiety, stress, depression, and much more. So you can be confident that thousands and thousands of people have been helped by this treatment alone.
You would be surprised by the power of just having someone objective, who won’t judge you, who will listen to anything you’ll say and will not tell anyone. For that reason alone, you would likely find that therapy is at least worth a try.

You might be thinking, “What’s the point of talking about this problem? Talking about it is not going to fix it.”
And that’s true, you have to formulate a plan for how you are going to troubleshoot and problem solve, that’s important, but people greatly underestimate the value of just being able to talk a problem through. I can say that many people I work with noticeably feel better in the session. I watch them come in stressed and tense, and as the session goes on, if they can just fully ventilate and actually talk about what they’re going through and how they’re feeling about it they leave much more relaxed and feeling much better.
Even if you don’t want to learn skills and things, just come and know that you’ll probably feel better by just talking about it.

It’s no trouble at all. Therapy is all about you and your path to feeling better and living well again. If I can help achieve that, great, but if you feel someone else could better serve you that’s completely fine too. This journey is about what is best for you so no hard feelings!
